Every piece of wood furniture and every wood structure starts as a tree. This article walks through how lumber mills turn trees into lumber, with a focus on why moisture content matters to the quality of the final product.
Assigns a grade to each piece of lumber that indicates its quality, based on a variety of characteristics. Softwood lumber grade stamps also carry a moisture designation, such as S-DRY or KD.
To maximize wood’s value and strength, mills invest time and money in 가마 건조 to remove excess moisture from the lumber.
Kiln drying some hardwood species can take a month or more, depending on the wood’s initial MC.
Properly dried wood has many advantages over green wood for both producers and consumers. It reduces waste in manufacturing and extends the service life and usefulness of wood products, giving the consumer a stable product that will last for years.
- 목재 생산자들은 "녹색” wood, using spacers called stickers to create gaps so air can circulate throughout the stack.
- Once the wood is in the kiln, it’s heated to temperatures that depend on the species, typically about 110°F to 180°F in conventional kilns and about 230°F to 280°F in high-temperature kilns.
- Operators constantly monitor kiln temperatures and relative humidity (RH), as well as the lumber’s MC. The goal is to dry the lumber to the correct MC for how it will be used.
If the wood in a mill’s production line is too wet or too dry, the finished product may receive a lower grade and will have a lower dollar value than a piece that has been properly kiln dried.
After drying, in-line moisture measurement systems can identify and mark pieces that are too wet or too dry.
Those pieces can be pulled from the line before further processing and re-dried or re-milled as needed to get the highest grade possible from each piece, which increases the mill’s profits and gives consumers better materials.
Many consumers and builders believe concerns about lumber MC end when the wood leaves the mill. In fact, wood products should be measured and monitored after that, too. Wood keeps gaining or losing moisture until it reaches its 평형 수분 함량 (EMC) with its surroundings, so its MC needs to be right for where it will be used.
People are increasingly conscious of the environmental footprint we leave behind, and the wood products industry has been shifting its approach to sustainability. Here are three examples:
It aims to balance our current needs with those of future generations.
Only certain trees are harvested, allowing younger trees to mature and the forest to regenerate.
Like any industry, wood products manufacturing uses energy and produces emissions, and many modern mills are adopting practices to reduce their carbon footprint.
Well-managed forests keep storing carbon as they regrow, and wood products continue to store carbon throughout their service life.
Producing new lumber involves harvesting, transporting, processing, and drying, all of which use energy. Reclaimed wood skips many of those steps.
Wagner Meters has made moisture measurement products for the wood products industry since 1965, with solutions for lumber producers, secondary wood products manufacturers, and installers of wood products.
