On the shores of Puget Sound, in the vacation-home community of Grapeview, Washington, you’ll find Grapeview Point Boat Works, a wooden boat restoration, repair, and new-build business. Owner Tom Regan, formerly an electronics and manufacturing contractor, started the company by happy accident. At the time of this 2019 article, it was 17 years old.
Regan builds 15- to 20-foot custom wooden sailboats, rowboats, and canoes for customers much like himself: busy professionals who grew up with wooden boats in the family. He also works off-site at local marinas on boats up to 30 feet long.
His maintenance and restoration work ranges from minor structural repairs to restoring boats with few original parts still in good shape. Most of the boats have a white oak or mahogany backbone.
According to Regan, a wood that’s being used more and more for boatbuilding is sapele, an African hardwood that’s available in very large, high-quality pieces at a reasonable price. Soft yellow cedar is typically used for planking and decks.
Regan uses local woods suitable for boatbuilding whenever possible. “You need a certain amount of rot resistance and the wood needs to hold a finish well,” he says. “If the boat needs to be particularly lightweight, we’ll use woods that are less dense. It depends on how the boat is going to be moved.”
Regan generally buys rough-sawn wood from mills, usually planks about 15 to 20 feet long, at least 1″ x 18″, and up to 4 inches thick. He runs the wood through jointers and planers to make finished lumber, with final dimensions depending on the size of the boat.
Once a board is jointed and planed smooth, he cuts curved shapes on table saws and band saws. Regan says steam bending is the fastest way to make a bent part, compared with cutting it out in sections and joining them or gluing up laminations into a curve.

To steam bend wood, the wood needs a high moisture content. The moisture in the wood carries the heat of the steam into the center of the piece. If the wood is dry, the heat doesn’t transfer as well, and the wood is much more likely to split or crack when it’s bent.
Buying freshly cut wood that’s still wet inside is ideal, but that can be difficult because some species are shipped from overseas. Kiln drying helps stop the spread of insects, but kiln-dried wood doesn’t steam bend well. Regan says you can restore the moisture by soaking the wood.
(Fiber saturation point varies by species but averages about 30% moisture content.)
Regan has used a Wagner moisture meter for several years and still has the original battery in it.

He cautions that you can’t tell how wet a piece of wood is by looking at it. You need a reading from inside the wood.
Regan also notes that because he works with different types of wood, being able to easily switch the meter between species, without conversion tables or temperature corrections, was another selling point.
He once contacted Wagner Meters’ customer service when he was getting uneven moisture readings on a boat curing inside a boathouse. He learned that salt water crystals can affect moisture meter readings and was thankful for the tips he received. “It’s the type of tool that if you don’t have it, there is no substitute for it. You can either measure moisture or you can’t.”
