Moisture content can have a big impact on wood flooring installations. Understanding how moisture in concrete slabs and wood subfloors affects the life and quality of a wood floor is essential for any flooring specialist.
Knowing the basics of concrete moisture testing and the types of wood moisture meters available will help you get a smooth, problem-free installation.
The moisture content of wood flooring changes over time and with changes in its environment. When you’re working to prevent moisture problems in a wood floor, several layers can contribute to moisture issues, right away or down the road.
Acclimating and installing the flooring itself is only one step in a series that should be part of every wood flooring installation.
콘크리트 슬래브
"저는 목재 바닥 전문가인데 콘크리트에 대해 왜 알아야 하나요?"
For a wood floor installed over a concrete slab (with or without a separate subfloor), moisture in the slab can have real consequences for the finished floor. If a new slab hasn’t dried enough, its moisture will keep moving up through the surface and can cause anything from adhesive failure to warping or cupping.
If an older slab has developed cracks or damp spots, those can also let moisture reach the surface and damage a wood floor. Even with the usual 증기 지연 제, moisture can still be a problem if the slab hasn’t dried properly. So it pays to understand concrete moisture testing.
Concrete moisture conditions are most reliably determined with in-situ relative humidity (RH) testing, using probes placed in the slab. Other methods, such as 염화칼슘 testing and the plastic sheet test, only reflect conditions near the surface and have proven problematic.
콘크리트 수분계 can sometimes help by taking relative readings on existing slabs to find the areas that most need further testing with a quantitative method, such as in-situ RH testing per ASTM F2170.
Because surface concrete meters don’t show moisture conditions deeper in the slab, quantitative testing still needs to be done.
You, as the flooring contractor, may not do the RH testing yourself, but it pays to check what the job specs call for and what the test results show before you start your installation. Moisture problems in the slab may not ultimately be your responsibility, but if they go unchecked, they often end up becoming your problem.

Improper moisture conditions in a wood subfloor can lead to moisture problems in the finished floor. Two types of wood moisture meters are commonly used to measure the moisture content (MC) of wood subfloors: pin meters and pinless (non-destructive) meters.
A pin meter measures wood’s moisture content by running an electrical current between the tips of two sharp pins inserted into the wood. Pin meters can have analog or digital displays, and they may include built-in settings for different wood species or come with a table for manually correcting readings by species.
One advantage of pin meters (only those with longer, insulated pins) is that you can test at different depths in the wood. The major disadvantages are the small area each reading covers and the holes left in the wood with every test.
Pinless meters send an electromagnetic signal into the wood to measure its moisture content. Their design lets you scan a lot of wood quickly and easily, and because they don’t use pins, they don’t damage the wood surface.
핀리스 미터 can also take comparative readings through many finishes without damaging them, and they’re generally less affected by temperature. Like pin meters, pinless meters have settings for different wood species.
With either type of meter, test several areas of a wood subfloor to make sure moisture conditions are right for installing the flooring. National Wood Flooring Association guidelines call for the flooring to be within 4 percentage points of the subfloor’s MC for strip flooring (under 3 inches wide), or within 2 points for plank flooring (3 inches or wider).

Before installation, check the flooring itself with an accurate wood moisture meter. Open and test several bundles to make sure the flooring is at a consistent MC and is compatible with the subfloor it will be installed over. As with the subfloor, both pin and pinless meters can show whether the flooring’s MC is right for a long-lasting installation.
The advantage of a pinless meter on wood flooring is that it doesn’t damage the boards, so there are no pinholes to fill or sand on the finished floor. Room conditions should also be checked to make sure they’re at normal living conditions. Even a good installation with proper moisture testing may not hold up to extreme swings in temperature and humidity.
Letting the wood acclimate to those normal conditions is also a recommended practice.
As the old saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” At every stage of a flooring job, an accurate moisture meter is your best defense against moisture problems.
